What is NUCCA upper cervical care?
NUCCA stands for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. It is a specialized way of caring for the very top of the spine, where your skull meets your neck. Instead of adjusting the whole back, a NUCCA doctor focuses on one small area and makes a single, carefully calculated correction.
At Ennis Chiropractic, NUCCA is all we do. As an upper cervical chiropractor serving Houston from our Clear Lake office, we have built our practice around one idea: when the upper neck is a contributing factor in your symptoms, precise and gentle care can help your body do what it was designed to do.

Why the atlas matters so much
The top bone in your spine is called the atlas, or C1. It’s a small ring of bone that holds up your head and surrounds the place where the brainstem becomes the spinal cord. Nerve signals between your brain and body pass through this area. So do important blood vessels and the fluid that cushions your brain and spinal cord.
Because the atlas sits at such a busy junction, small shifts here can matter. When the atlas is out of its normal position, the head tilts slightly off center. The body compensates. Muscles tighten, posture shifts and the rest of the spine adapts to keep your eyes level. Over time, many people feel this as stiffness, headaches, dizziness or nerve pain that seems to have no clear cause.
Your body’s master breaker
Dr. Michael Ennis often explains it this way. Picture the electrical panel in your house. There’s a master breaker at the top and rows of smaller breakers below.
Now imagine the master breaker has a short in it. It doesn’t cut all the power, but it keeps causing the smaller breakers to trip. You can reset them one at a time, and the lights come back on. But they keep tripping, again and again, because the real problem is upstairs in the master breaker.
Your spine works in a similar way. The atlas is the master breaker, and everything below it is a sub breaker. For years, Dr. Ennis found himself resetting sub breakers for patients. NUCCA gave him a way to analyze and correct the master breaker itself, with the goal of corrections that last longer and care that takes less time.
How we measure before we adjust
NUCCA care starts with measurement, not guesswork. Every atlas shifts in its own direction and by its own amount, so every correction has to be calculated for you.
- Health history and exam. We start by listening. Your doctor reviews your symptoms, past injuries and what you’ve already tried, then performs non-invasive exams to look for signs that the upper neck is involved.
- Specialized imaging. When care is appropriate, we take precise X-rays of the upper neck from several angles. These images let us measure how your atlas has shifted, down to fractions of a degree.
- Calculating your correction. From those measurements, your doctor works out the exact direction and amount of gentle force needed to guide your atlas back toward balance.
- Measurements before and after. We check your alignment before and after each adjustment, so both you and your doctor can see what changed.

The gentle NUCCA correction
This is the part most people are curious about. You lie on your side on a specially designed table, with your head resting on a firm support. Your doctor places a hand just behind your ear and applies a light, steady pressure along the line calculated from your imaging.
That’s it. There is no twisting, no popping or cracking and no quick thrust. Most patients describe it as a gentle touch. Many are surprised by how little they feel, and some feel deeply relaxed afterward.
The correction is gentle on purpose. The atlas is surrounded by delicate structures, and our goal is to guide it, not force it.
After the correction: checking how it holds
A correction only helps if it holds. After your adjustment, we recheck your measurements to confirm that your alignment improved. When it’s appropriate, we take post-correction images to compare with your first set.
Then we give your body time. You’ll rest briefly after the correction, and we’ll talk about simple ways to protect it during the first days, such as being mindful of how you sleep and avoiding sudden jolts to the neck.
On follow-up visits, we check your alignment first. If you’re still holding, we don’t adjust. Many patients find that their corrections hold longer as care goes on. That’s the point: fewer adjustments over time, not more.
Who NUCCA care may help
People come to us for many reasons, but they often share a story. They’ve seen several doctors, had tests that came back normal and still don’t feel like themselves. When the upper neck is a contributing factor, NUCCA care may help with:
- Vertigo and dizziness, including Meniere’s disease
- Migraines and headaches and post-concussion symptoms
- Trigeminal neuralgia, TMJ and jaw pain and numbness and tingling
- Neck pain and fibromyalgia
- Anxiety, sleep problems and brain fog and fatigue
NUCCA isn’t right for everyone, and it doesn’t replace care from your physician. If your exam suggests something else is going on, we’ll tell you honestly and help you find the right next step. You can browse every condition we see on our conditions page.
NUCCA vs. traditional chiropractic
Many people tell us, “I’ve been to a chiropractor before.” That’s helpful to know, but NUCCA will likely feel very different.
Traditional chiropractic care often involves adjusting several areas of the spine by hand, sometimes with a quick movement that makes a popping sound. Many people benefit from it. NUCCA takes a narrower path: one area, precise imaging, a calculated correction and a light touch. Instead of adjusting on a set schedule, we adjust only when your measurements show it’s needed.
We have a full side-by-side comparison here: NUCCA vs. traditional chiropractic.
Thrive Care: our three-phase approach
We organize care into a program we call Thrive Care. It was built for people who feel they’ve tried everything and want a clear plan, not more guesswork.
- Phase 1: Find the cause. We complete a thorough health history and exam to find out whether misalignment in the upper neck may be contributing to your symptoms.
- Phase 2: Correct and stabilize. If NUCCA is right for you, we create a care plan tailored to your needs, built around precise NUCCA corrections and checks to make sure they hold.
- Phase 3: Thrive. Once your body is stable, the focus shifts to ongoing wellness, with check-ups spaced to fit your life so you can keep feeling your best.
You’ll always know which phase you’re in, what comes next and what it costs.
What a visit feels like
Your first visit is a conversation before it’s anything else. You’ll sit down with your doctor and talk through your health history. Then come the non-invasive exams, a one-on-one consultation and, if NUCCA looks like a good fit, a personalized care plan. Everything is explained in plain English. There’s no pressure to start care.
Follow-up visits are calm and unhurried. We check your alignment, correct it only if needed, recheck and let you rest. Most people leave feeling relaxed rather than sore.

Why patients choose Ennis Chiropractic
NUCCA is a specialty, and we’re one of the few NUCCA practices in the Houston area. Because NUCCA is all we do, every part of our office is built around it, from how we measure to how we schedule follow-up checks.
We’re also an insurance-free practice. That means you and your doctor decide on your care, our prices are published up front and you’ll know what your care plan costs before you begin. HSA and FSA funds are welcome. And because our goal is a correction that holds, you shouldn’t expect to be adjusted at every visit. We’d rather see you holding well than adjust you when you don’t need it.
