Why post-concussion symptoms may be connected to your upper neck
A concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow, jolt or rapid movement of the head. Most people recover within days to weeks. Some, however, continue to have headaches, dizziness, brain fog, light sensitivity or fatigue for months.1 When symptoms linger like this, it is often called post-concussion syndrome.
Here is the part that is easy to miss. The force that injures the brain almost always travels through the neck too. A car accident, a fall on the stairs, a hit on the football field or a slip on a wet floor can whip the head forward and back. That is the same motion as whiplash. Neck injuries commonly happen alongside concussions, and the neck itself can produce headaches and dizziness after a head injury.2
The atlas (C1), the top bone in your neck, is especially vulnerable. It balances the weight of your head and sits just millimeters from the brainstem. When an injury shifts it out of position, several things may follow. The muscles at the base of the skull can lock into a protective guard. The upper neck joints can send confusing position signals to the balance centers of the brain. And the nerves of the upper neck share pathways with nerves that carry head pain. The result can look a lot like a concussion that will not heal, even after the brain itself has had time to recover.
That is why people who look for a post concussion chiropractor in Houston often have the same story: normal scans, a recovery plan that helped somewhat, and symptoms that still will not fade.
Concussion and whiplash: two injuries, one event
It helps to think of your injury as two problems that happened at once. The brain side, with its rest, gradual return to activity and monitoring, belongs with your physician or concussion team. The neck side is often treated with time, pain relievers or general physical therapy. If the upper neck was never measured precisely, a misalignment may still be keeping symptoms going.
Signs the neck may be part of your symptoms
Every case is different, but certain patterns make us want to look closely at the upper neck. Headaches that start at the base of the skull and wrap forward. Dizziness that shows up when you turn your head or look up, rather than coming out of nowhere. Neck stiffness, a sense that your head feels heavy, or one shoulder that sits higher than the other. Symptoms that flare after long periods at a computer or behind the wheel.
None of these prove the neck is involved, and none of them replace a diagnosis from your physician. They are clues. Combined with a careful exam and precise measurements, they help us decide whether NUCCA care is likely to be a useful part of your recovery.
How NUCCA care helps post-concussion symptoms
NUCCA stands for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. It is a precise, gentle approach to the alignment of the atlas, and it is well suited to people whose neck has been injured. You can learn more on our NUCCA upper cervical care page.
Clearance from your physician first. Before we begin, you should have been evaluated by a physician, and any emergency warning signs ruled out. If you have not been checked, or your symptoms are getting worse, we will send you to the right place first.
Measure. We take a detailed history of your injury and your symptoms since. We assess your posture and look for body imbalances that often go with an upper neck misalignment. When a misalignment is suspected, precise X-ray views of the upper neck let us measure the atlas position and calculate the exact correction needed.
Correct. You lie comfortably on your side while the doctor uses a light, precise contact just behind the ear. There is no twisting, no popping or cracking and no sudden movement. For an injured, guarded neck, that gentleness is the point.
Hold. We measure again after the correction, then check at each follow-up visit whether the atlas is staying in place. We adjust only when measurements show it has shifted. As alignment stabilizes, the muscles that have been guarding since the injury often begin to relax. Many patients report that their headaches and dizziness ease gradually, and some say their thinking feels clearer.
Part of your recovery team
Post-concussion recovery often involves several professionals, such as your physician, a neurologist, a vestibular or physical therapist, or a counselor. NUCCA care fits alongside them. We never advise stopping or changing medication, and with your permission we are glad to share our findings with your other providers. If your dizziness is a main concern, our vertigo and dizziness page explains our approach in more detail.
What the research says
It is well established that most concussions resolve within weeks, that some people develop lasting symptoms, and that the neck is a common and often overlooked contributor to headaches and dizziness after head injury.12
Research on NUCCA care specifically for post-concussion symptoms is limited. We are not going to overstate it. What we can offer is a careful, measurement-based approach: we check whether your atlas is out of alignment, correct it gently if it is, and track whether your headaches, dizziness and focus change over time.
In our office, we have seen patients with lingering symptoms after accidents and falls report meaningful improvement as their alignment held. We have also seen people whose symptoms were driven by something else, and when that is the case, we tell you and help you find the right care.
