Living with pain that doesn’t let up
If you’re dealing with chronic pain, you already know how much it takes from you. It can make work harder, cut into your sleep and keep you from the people and activities you love. Many of the patients we meet in Houston have seen several doctors, tried several treatments and still haven’t found lasting relief.
If that sounds familiar, it’s worth asking a different question. Instead of only asking where it hurts, ask what might be keeping the pain going. For some people, part of the answer sits at the very top of the spine. That’s where upper cervical care for chronic pain comes in.
Why the upper neck may matter
The top bone in your neck is called the atlas, or C1. It holds up your head and surrounds the brainstem as it becomes the spinal cord. Signals that help control muscle tone, posture and how you sense pain all pass through this area.
When the atlas shifts out of its normal position, your head tilts slightly off center. Your body works hard to keep your eyes level. Muscles in your neck, shoulders and back tighten. Your hips may tilt. Over time, these small compensations can add up to stiffness and pain far from the neck itself.
Dr. Michael Ennis likes to compare it to an electrical panel. If the master breaker at the top has a short, the smaller breakers below keep tripping. You can reset them one at a time, but they’ll keep tripping until the master breaker is fixed. In the spine, the atlas is that master breaker.
This doesn’t mean every type of chronic pain comes from the neck. Pain is complex, and many factors play a role. But when the upper neck is a contributing factor, addressing it can make a real difference for many patients.
How upper cervical care is different
Upper cervical chiropractic is a specialized form of chiropractic care. Rather than adjusting many areas of the spine, it focuses on the atlas and the area around it. At Ennis Chiropractic, we use the NUCCA method, which stands for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association.
NUCCA care follows three simple ideas:
- Measure first. We use a detailed exam and precise imaging of the upper neck to see exactly how your atlas has shifted.
- Correct gently. The correction is a light, steady pressure just behind the ear. There’s no twisting, popping or cracking.
- Make it hold. We recheck your alignment after each correction and adjust only when your measurements show you need it.
That last point matters most for chronic pain. Many patients tell us they’ve had care that felt good for a few days before the pain came back. The goal of NUCCA is a correction your body can hold, so you need fewer adjustments over time. You can read more on our NUCCA upper cervical care page.
Conditions where chronic pain may involve the upper neck
People come to us with many kinds of long-term pain. Some of the most common include:
- Neck pain and stiffness that keeps coming back. See neck pain relief.
- Headaches and migraines, especially those that start at the base of the skull. See migraine and headache relief.
- Widespread pain and fatigue, as with fibromyalgia.
- Facial and jaw pain, such as trigeminal neuralgia and TMJ.
- Mid and low back pain linked to uneven posture.
Many people with chronic pain also struggle with poor sleep, brain fog or anxiety. These often travel together, and as one improves, others may too.
Our Thrive Care approach
At Ennis Chiropractic, chronic pain care follows our three-phase Thrive Care program. We sometimes describe the phases as fixing, building and thriving.
- Fixing: find the cause. We start with a thorough health history and exam to learn whether your upper neck may be contributing to your pain.
- Building: correct and stabilize. If NUCCA is right for you, your care plan focuses on precise corrections and helping your body hold them.
- Thriving: stay well. Once you’re stable, check-ups are spaced to fit your life, so you can focus on living rather than managing pain.
You’ll always know which phase you’re in and what comes next.
Working with your other doctors
Upper cervical care isn’t meant to replace your physician, pain specialist or physical therapist. It works alongside them. Please keep taking any medications as prescribed, and talk with your prescribing doctor before making any changes.
If something in your history suggests you need a different kind of evaluation first, we’ll tell you. Pain that comes with fever, unexplained weight loss, new weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control needs prompt attention from a physician.
